Error Correction

I have some personal downtime scheduled for the end of next month, and one project I intend to tackle is updating the ebooks here at the Vault. Since the Vault's inception, I've made tweaks to the various formats hosted here - some more than others - and I want to take the time to ensure every ebook is consistent.

I also intend to correct a myriad of minor but perpetually annoying - to my mind, anyway - errors that I've noticed in my rereading of some of these stories over the last few months. I do proofread and copyedit every story featured here before it's posted, but things have a way of sneaking under the radar in the heat of the moment. I've been collecting a list of typos, grammatical errors, punctuation issues, et cetera, and I'll be doing a mass update to the ebooks hosted here to address these.

I'm posting about this for two reasons - one, to let anyone who's been curious know that I'm aware of the inconsistencies in the formatting of certain ebooks and intend to correct them, but two, more importantly - have you noticed any errors in any of the ebooks here? Spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax, formatting? If you have, please do let me know in the comments or in an email to rbdash47@gmail.com. My goal is to provide publication-quality books here, and I want to minimize errors as much as possible.

(Please note this does not apply to the Fallout: Equestria ebooks - Kkat specifically requested that Fo:E go completely unchanged from the original Google Docs, and I am obliged to do so.)

  1. "I've been collecting a list of typos, grammatical errors, punctuation issues, et cetera, and I'll be" (end of line)

I'm not sure if that was tongue-in-cheek or not, but that made me smile : )

    1. *facehoof* That was not on purpose... but let's all pretend it was! Yes. Heh.

  2. Probably a good thing that Fo:E isn't changed. I mean, considering its length, the editing is spectacular, but it has more than a few missing/incorrect words and punctuation errors. Finding and compiling them all would be a mammoth of a task.

Hey, I was just about to say, 'what about Past Sins? That has so many errors that it probably wouldn't get past the pre-readers these days' but then I realised that we don't have Past Sins here. Is there a reason for that? As fics go, that one is pretty damn big! :P

    1. At the risk of sailing close to the wind...RDB47 has been putting up some absolute blinders that put Past Sins to shame. I wouldn't want to see it put up solely because it's so well known. It's good fun, but it doesn't hold up so well compared to the really well written fics.

Of course, there would be no reason to complain if it went up in addition to the weekly fic.

    2. Is this a bad place to admit I haven't actually read Fo:E yet? When I finally do, I'll be reading a personal copy, and copyediting as I go, just in case Kkat will agree to having a cleaned up version available.

Past Sins seems to be in a perpetual state of being rewritten, either by Pen Stroke and Batty Gloom or authorized editors. When a definitive version is available, it will be here (assuming PS&BG are up for it).

    3. Hum, I guess I can't reply to replies, so I hope you see this, InquisitorM!

Past Sins will be included in the Vault as a Classic - it had a huge response in the community and has spawned a fair share of spinoffs, fan art, etc.

    4. Good. As long as I don't have to miss my Friday read for it... :)

    5. That makes sense. And RBD, you really need to read Fo:E, haha. It's definitely one of the defining achievements of the fandom. (Even if I personally prefer Project Horizons.) Well worth the time!

As far as Past Sins is concerned, I agree with you, InquisitorM, but if MLD is here (which as a 'classic' it should be), then Past Sins definitely should be as well.

Of course, the problem with that logic is that a fic like Cupcakes would qualify on those grounds. Quality aside, no one can deny the huge impact a story like that has had.

    6. I know, I know. I caught most of the gist of it while I was formatting/compiling the ebooks here, and I still very much want to read it, it's just... time. Sigh.

Uhh... Cupcakes'd be here already - again, as a Classic - if the author'd respond to my request. Heh heh...

    7. Haha, yeah. I know what you mean. Fo:E took me months to chip my way through, and I loved every minute of it. I think it should stand testament to Project Horizons, however, that I am going through it in half the time, and it's even longer.

And for the sake of consistency, Cupcakes should be here, haha. It's a shame he's not replying!
